About Genie Army
The Genie Army began during the 2014 Australian Open to support an up and coming Canadian tennis player, Eugenie Bouchard. The group of a dozen students wanted to support a young player that was relatively unknown to the rest of the world. They donned t-shirts spelling out G-E-N-I-E-! as well as several maple leafs to show their support for the Canadian star. As Genie continued to succeed and progress through the tournament, the Genie Army began to grow. The Genie Army followed Genie all the way to the semifinals, where she fell to Li Na who went on to win the 2014 Australian Open. Since then, the Genie Army has expanded to countries all over the world and is recognised as Genie’s official support group.
During the summer of 2014, the Genie army attended the Roger’s Cup in Montreal. There, the Genie Army was able to support Genie Bouchard and promote the tournament. Together with the support of the rest of the stadium, they provided one of the most spectacular atmospheres ever seen in tennis history. Unfortunately, Genie lost in the second round, however the Genie Army continued to support and participate in tournament events, an overall experience they’ll never forget.
As well as Montreal, the Genie Army travelled to Perth in January 2015 to support Genie Bouchard and Vasek Popisil as they represented Canada in the Hopman Cup. Canada finished 3rd in their group, but overall it was a very entertaining tournament that helped the Genie Army practice their new chants in preparation for the Australian Open.
The Genie Army aim to establish the best support group ever seen for a single player, in hoping that it will help Genie eventually become world number 1. In addition to this, the Genie Army endeavour to increase the support for tennis worldwide and enhance the atmosphere during matches.
